Farm Decision Making content is based on the Head, Heart and Gut framework developed by Cam Nicholson, Jeanette Long and colleagues in GRDC’s Grain and Graze and National Landcare programs. Dairy Australia would like to acknowledge and thank Cam for allowing
Dairy Australia to utilise this content and adapt it for use in the Australian dairy industry.

On completing this online material and the discussion group you will be able to:
• reflect on previous decision making and describe influences on this
• use the decision-making matrix process to assist decision making
• identify the key decision influences on each of the critical considerations on a system change and/or other decisions.
In the video below, Dairy Australia’s Mijail Karpyn welcomes you to the program, explains what the online learning experiences entail and highlights how Farm Decision Making can develop your skills as a farm decision-maker.

Activity 1 - What decisions are you making for your farm business?
On any given day of the week across the year, we all find ourselves making different decisions about farming practice and our farm business directions. Each day often brings new decisions to be made.
Before you complete the learning module below, it is good to stop and think about what decisions you are making for your farm business. This is done so that when you read the materials you can think about how you would apply the principles and the decision-making processes to the farm business decisions you are making today and in the future.
Activity 2 - Select the tile below to access the learning materials
Remember to keep thinking about the farm decisions YOU are making as you read through, watch the videos and complete the activities. Ask yourself "how can I apply what I just read on my farm?"
After completing the module, bring your thoughts and questions to the discussion group and the facilitator will help you to apply the decision-making process to your farm. It's OK to come to the discussion group with more questions than answers - the facilitator will make sure you finish up with a clear way to apply the head, heart and gut framework to your farm and your decision-making.
You might find the Decision Wizard helpful to make decisions on your farm. This tool uses the same process as described in the learning material you have just completed.
