Welcome to the Dairy Australia and National Herd Improvement Association (NHIA) course on artificial insemination (AI) in cattle. This course focuses on the current, industry-endorsed, best practices for completing procedures associated with AI. As well as learning practical skills during the face-to-face practical sessions you will also gather important theory knowledge through completing this online material. The online material has been set out to prepare you for working around cattle and completing the assessment tasks for the course. In the online material, you will read and watch videos as well as complete interactive activities that will help reinforce the knowledge required to complete AI.
Every animal and farm is different, and you will need to take the information and processes you learn in this course and adapt it so that you are able to apply the best approach in your workplace. By doing this you should be able to increase conception rates, as well as ensure their health and welfare.
By completing this course, which includes both the online material, practical workshops and assessment tasks, you will be able to:- prepare tools, equipment and paperwork for insemination of cattle
- identify elements of cattle reproductive physiology
- identify cows on heat
- use insemination equipment correctly
- inseminate cattle
- apply pregnancy testing techniques
- clean work area and equipment
- complete documentation and records
- carry out post artificial insemination procedures such as managing nutrition and husbandry.
The material in this course (both online and workshop activities) aligns with the assessment activities required to successfully complete AHCAIS304 - Artificially inseminate livestock.
You will also find that some of the content in this course aligns with elements of:- AHCAIS202 - Assist with artificial insemination procedures
- AHCLSK341 - Coordinate artificial insemination and fertility management of livestock.
