Dairy farmers & the environment:
The aim of this program is to provide an understanding of issues of water resources and management and environmental biodiversity set especially within the framework of or integrated within the dairy industry.
This program will give you the foundational knowledge and understanding of the environmental science, risks and actions related to the dairy industry in Australia. The 'Dairy Farmers and the Environment' learning package is developed to address the challenge water resources and the environment poses to dairy farming but also to capitalise on the opportunities available. The program emphasises the interdisciplinarity of water availability and environmental biodiversity.

About this program
-
So how did you get here?
Maybe you’ve come to these modules looking for practical information, tools and support to address a specific issue you’re concerned about, for example saving water in the dairy shed or creating a shelterbelt to offer greater protection to stock during hot periods or extreme weather events.
Perhaps you have identified the need to make some changes to your management practices through the program Our Farm Our Plan. Or, you may have recently completed the online tool 'Farm Environmental Tracker'.
You may have been given feedback from your Milk Supply Officer about performance gaps that need to be addressed. Some might be looking to answer questions from their bank or finance provider about their environmental performance when they were applying for further finance.
Still, others may be looking to take advantage of processer incentive payments for superior environmental performance on-farm or positioning themselves to attract good quality labour to a farm they can be proud to work at.
However, you got here, you’re here because you want to take some action. Taking action is in line with farmer values of protecting their environment but it will also improve your business and reduce your risk.

Why is it important to Australian dairy farmers?
Managing the environment is one of the most important factors affecting dairy farms performance – how we manage it is critical to ensure future sustainability and profitability of the dairy sector.
Changes to climate is just one of the many risks we need to be able to manage in the dairy business, and policy and farm targets are likely to impact on how we operate in the future. We need to be prepared! -
What topics will you cover?
Here are the three modules that can be taken from start to finish or in any order based on your needs, knowledge, and interests:
