In this module, you’ll continue to develop the skills and capabilities you’ll need to build a good understanding of WHERE you want to head with your farm business, and your life.

The 'Now-Where-How-Review' Business Planning Cycle - find more detail on page 2 of the QuickPlan workbook.

Once you’ve completed the activities in this module, you’ll be able to:
  • Identify goals you have for your farm business and the actions they require
  • Make sure your goals are S.M.A.R.T

The Our Farm, Our Plan program supports you to create your own business plan. Before jumping in and writing your plan, it’s good to think about what really want for your business and your life – your goals. After completing this module, you’ll be able to express goals for your farm business and actions required in order to achieve them.

To complete the activities in the module, you'll need:
  • Your Our Farm, Our Plan (OFOP) Online Course Participant Guide
  • Your OFOP QuickPlan booklet

In this section of the module, you’ll think about why goals are an important part of a successful business.

Click play to watch this TEDTalk: “How to Achieve Your Most Ambitious Goals” by Stephen Duneier. It is a bit of a long watch, but well worth it for the message it shares.

When you set goals, they need to work for you and your farm business.

Watch the clip below. It details how to make your goals S.M.A.R.T.

In the next section of this module, you'll identify goals and associated actions you can take to achieve them. While you're working through this process, take care to set your goals so that they are:

SPECIFIC: Usually this involves the ‘what’ of the goal

MEASURABLE: How will you know if you’ve achieved the goal?

AGREED/ACHIEVABLE: Is everyone (who needs to be) on board with the goal? Do you have, or can you get, the resources to reach the goal?

REALISTIC: Is this goal ambitious, yet still within reach?

TIME-BOUND: Have you identified when the goal should be reached (or when you’ll review the goal)?
Here are some examples of S.M.A.R.T goals:

In this section of the module, you will set some goals for your farm business.

Start by watching the clip below:

You and your business partner/s should spend some time working through the QuickPlan booklet to set your goals and identify actions that can be taken to achieve them.
The process involves you identifying a number of statements, goals and actions that will make a big difference to you and your business. In this activity, you’re encouraged to throw the net nice and wide – later in the Our Farm, Our Plan course, you'll select the goals you would like to prioritise.
You can use all of the activities you've completed in the course so far (Farm Fitness Checklist, SWOT analysis, Vision Drawing) to help you to set your goals.
Grab your QuickPlan booklet, flick to page 14 and work through each of the sections. Come back to the course when you’re done.
